"May" is used to ask for permission.
"May I see you tomorrow?" means do I have your permission.
"Can" is used to question one's ability or strength or resources.
"Can you pay for that?" means that I am questioning your resources or ability to pay for something. You will hear many native American speakers of English using "can" for both situations.
