Hi. This is Ray McDonald and Nancy Beardsley with words and phrases from the English USA worksheet for Lesson 38. We begin with some nouns:

 

cafe

Here are some adjectives:

 

handsome

ハンサムな、顔立ちが美しい

 

interesting

white

white hair

 

Now, some grammar notes:

 

The words we use to describe the physical features or characteristics of people are adjectives. In English, we use adjectives just before the noun they describe. This may occur in two places in a sentence, before or after the verb. First, before the subject of the sentence.

 

The tall boy is my brother.

背の高い男の子は私の兄(弟)です。

 

That short woman is talking to Martin.

その背の低い女性はマーティンに話しかけています。

 

Her long fingers are beautiful.

彼女の長い指は美しい。

 

Second, the adjective can occur after a "be" verb.

 

Mr. Kovisar is fat.

コビサーさんは太っています。

 

She is pretty.

彼女は可愛い。

 

Your hair is brown.

あなたの髪は茶色い。

 

Or, It can occur after verbs with nouns.

 

She has long fingers.

彼女は長い指をしている。

 

He is the one with short hair.

短い髪をした人が彼です。

 

Howard's sister plays an old violin.

ハワードの姉(妹)は古いバイオリンを弾きます。
