Lesson 100, Part 1

  音 L100P1J.MP3[587KB]

ELAINE:

Excuse me, Martin. May I interrupt?

MARTIN:

Of course, Elaine. Come in.

ELAINE:

Could we talk about Vivian?

MARTIN:

Why, is something wrong?

ELAINE:

No, nothing's wrong. It's time for her job evaluation.

MARTIN:

Really? How long has she been working here?

ELAINE:

Six months.

MARTIN:

I can't believe it.

ELAINE:

In general, what do you think of her work?

MARTIN:

I don't work with her very much.

ELAINE:

Doesn't she assist you?

MARTIN:

Yes, but I don't ask very much of her. I travel so much. I do most of my work on the road.

ELAINE:

But in general, what do you think?

MARTIN:

She's an excellent worker, I think. You'll want to talk to the other people of course.

ELAINE:

Oh, yes. I'll talk to everyone she works with. Can you mention anything specific?

MARTIN:

She's always at her desk when I need her. She seems to come on time every morning.

ELAINE:

Do you have regular work for her?

MARTIN:

Not really. I just give her whatever I need.

ELAINE:

What does she usually do for you?

MARTIN:

Mainly word processing. She types the final copies of my stories for the file.

ELAINE:

How are her typing and other skills?

MARTIN:

Her work for me is outstanding. She has done some research for me. She's also done some music research.

ELAINE:

Would you be happy to have her stay?

MARTIN:

Sure. I enjoy working with her. I'd be very happy to have her continue.

ELAINE:

Thanks. I'll talk to all the others. Goodbye.

MARTIN:

Bye.

CARA:

Hi, Martin. May I come in?

MARTIN:

Sure, Cara. Have a seat. Do you want some coffee?

CARA:

No, thanks. I won't stay long. I know you're busy.

MARTIN:

You sound serious. What can I do for you?

CARA:

Did Elaine talk to you about Vivian?

MARTIN:

Yes, she just left a few minutes ago.

CARA:

What did you tell her?

MARTIN:

I told her I thought Vivian was very good.

CARA:

You did?

MARTIN:

What's the trouble?

CARA:

I told her that Vivian wasn't very good.

MARTIN:

Oh, oh.

CARA:

I feel bad about it.

MARTIN:

Why did you say she wasn't very good?

CARA:

She isn't. I don't think she's a very strong worker.

MARTIN:

Why do you say that?

CARA:

She doesn't do very good work for me.

MARTIN:

What does she do?

CARA:

She does all my filing.

MARTIN:

Is anyone good at filing?

CARA:

It's very important. You know we have to keep everything in order. She's not neat. I can't find things in the file.

MARTIN:

Can she?

CARA:

No, that's the problem.

CARA:

I would really like to talk about this some more. Do you
mind, Martin?

MARTIN:

Of course I don't mind.

CARA:

I'm worried. I may not be right about Vivian.
