EILEEN:

Let's have some coffee.

MARTIN:

All right. There's a coffee shop next door.

EILEEN:

That would be nice.

MARTIN:

Two coffees, please.

コーヒーを2つお願いします。

EILEEN:

Did you like the play, Martin?

マーティン、劇は気に入った？

MARTIN:

It was interesting.

面白かった。

EILEEN:

Yes, it was interesting, but did you like it?

ええ、面白かったわね。でも気に入った？

MARTIN:

I'm not sure. What did you think?

どうだろう。どう思った？

EILEEN:

Well it was interesting. I really liked the first half.

そうね、面白かったわ。前半は実によかったわ。

MARTIN:

Really? I thought the first half was rather slow.

本当に？私は前半がいくぶんだらだらとしていると思った。

EILEEN:

Maybe it was a little long, don't you think?

たぶん少し長かったから。そう思わない？

MARTIN:

I don't know. It was either too slow or too long. I don't know which.

わからない。（話の展開が）遅すぎたのか長すぎたのかどっちかだ。どちらかはわからない。

EILEEN:

What about the second half? Did you like it?

後半はどう？気に入った？

MARTIN:

I liked it very much.

とても気に入った。

EILEEN:

I thought it was very moving.

とても感動的だと思ったわ。

MARTIN:

What do you mean, moving?

感動的とはどういうこと？

EILEEN:

Oh, Martin, you know what moving means.

あらマーティン、感動的という意味はわかるでしょ。

MARTIN:

Sometimes what you call moving doesn't move me.

君が感動的だということに私は感動しないことがある。

EILEEN:

You're not easily moved by plays.

あなたは劇ではなかなか感動しないものね。

MARTIN:

I guess not. What did you find moving?

そうだろうね。何が感動的だったの？

EILEEN:

I thought the death scene was very moving. I felt exactly as the father did.

死ぬ場面はとても感動的だと思ったわ。私も父親とまったく同じように感じたわ。

MARTIN:

Yes, that was rather emotional. Did you cry?

うん、あれはかなり感動的だった。泣いたかい？

EILEEN:

You know I always cry at emotional scenes. Did you cry?

感動的な場面では私がいつも泣くことを知っているでしょ。あなたは泣いた？

MARTIN:

No. I don't cry at plays.

いいや。私は劇では泣かない。

EILEEN:

Really? I thought I saw you.

本当に？あなたが泣くのを見たと思ったけれど。

MARTIN:

Perhaps a little. I found the last scene very sad. When the children left home, I think I cried a little.

たぶん少しは。最後の場面はとても悲しかった。子供たちが家を出て行く時、少し泣いたと思う。

EILEEN:

Did it remind you of our children?

私たちの子供たちのことを思い出させた？

MARTIN:

They haven't left home.

彼らは家を出ていないよ。

EILEEN:

But they will. That was the saddest thing in the play.

でもいずれは。あれは劇の中で一番悲しいことだったわ。

MARTIN:

But was it real?

でもあれは現実のことだったの？

EILEEN:

What do you mean?

どういう意味？

MARTIN:

Is that what really happens in families?

あれは家族に実際に起こることかな？

EILEEN:

Of course. Your children grow up, and they leave home. I left home. You left home. And our children will leave home.

もちろんよ。子供たちが育って家を出る。私は家を出た。あなたも家を出た。そして私たちの子供たちもいずれ家を出る。

MARTIN:

And our children will leave home. Let's not talk about that. I feel sad again. Are you crying?

そして私たちの子供たちもいずれ家を出る。そのことは話すのをよそう。また悲しくなってきた。泣いているのかい？

EILEEN:

A little. I'll be all right in a minute. Where's the coffee?

少し。すぐに大丈夫になるから。コーヒーはどこ？

MARTIN:

Here it is.

ほらここに。

MARTIN:

Thanks.

ありがとう。

EILEEN:

May I have some sugar, please?

砂糖をもらえる？

MARTIN:

Sorry. Here.

ごめん。ほら。

EILEEN:

Don't you think the last part was too fast?

最後の場面は速過ぎたと思わない？

MARTIN:

Do you think the actors spoke too fast?

俳優たちが速く話しすぎたと思うのかい？

EILEEN:

No, I don't mean that.

いいえ、そういうことではないわ。

MARTIN:

What do you mean?

どういう意味？

EILEEN:

It developed too fast.

展開が速過ぎたのよ。

MARTIN:

I see what you mean. The mother got sick, then she died very quickly. Then the children left home. It happened so fast.

言っていることがわかった。母親が病気になり、そしてすぐさま死んだ。そして子供たちは家を出た。とても速く事が起こったね。

EILEEN:

That's what I mean.

私が言いたかったのはそのことよ。

EILEEN:

Should we go home?

帰りましょうか？

MARTIN:

I'd like more coffee.

私はもっとコーヒーが飲みたい。
