Wheeewh. It's hot. I'm happy to meet you. I'm Ishikawa.

MARTIN:

Is that what I call you?

そういう呼び方でいいですか？

ISHIKAWA:

Yes, everybody does.

はい。みんなそう呼びます。

MARTIN:

Call me Martin. Is this a good time?

マーティンと呼んでください。今（話をしても）大丈夫ですか？

ISHIKAWA:

Sure. I need a break. Let's sit over there on that bench. Or is that too noisy?

いいですよ。休憩が必要です。あそこのベンチに座りましょう。それとも、騒がしすぎますか？

MARTIN:

No, that's fine.

いいえ、大丈夫です。

ISHIKAWA:

It's too hot for this work. What do you think of my work so far?

この仕事をするには暑すぎます。ここまでのところ私の仕事をどう思いますか？

MARTIN:

It's nice. I like murals.

いいと思います。壁画が好きです。

ISHIKAWA:

Do you really like it? I don't know what I think. Maybe it's going OK.

本当に好きですか？自分がどう思っているかわかりません。たぶん上手く行っていると思います。

MARTIN:

Do you always doubt yourself? I think it's very interesting so far.

いつも自分自身に疑問をお持ちですか？ここまでのところとても面白いものになっていると思いますよ。

ISHIKAWA:

I still have a lot of painting to do. It's not bad.

まだたくさん塗らなければならなりません。悪くありませんが。

MARTIN:

May I ask some questions?

いくつか質問してもよろしいですか？

ISHIKAWA:

Please do. I like to talk about my work. It helps me see things.

どうぞしてください。自分の仕事について話すのが好きですから。ものごとを見極める助けになります。

MARTIN:

You've painted that very large blue circle in the corner. What is that?

角のところにとても大きな青い丸を描いています。あれは何ですか？

ISHIKAWA:

It's the sun.

太陽です。

MARTIN:

I thought it might be. But the sun isn't blue. Why did you make it blue?

そうではないかと思いました。でも太陽は青くないですね。なぜ青くしたのですか？

ISHIKAWA:

It's hard to say. The sun should give life. Right? But the sun can't give life to everyone. For some people, the sun is not a benefit. Do you see?

説明するのは難しいです。太陽は命を与えるものです。そうですよね？でも太陽はすべての人に命を与えることはできない。ある人たちにとっては太陽は恩恵ではない。わかりますか？

MARTIN:

It's like the moon.

月のようですね。

ISHIKAWA:

Maybe.

MARTIN:

The group of people standing under the trees are very nice. Tell me about them.

木々の下に立っている人たちがとてもいい。彼らについて教えてください。

ISHIKAWA:

Do you like the way I've painted their clothes?

私が彼らの服を塗ったやり方が好きですか？

MARTIN:

They're very colorful. There are lots of bright colors. Why did you do that?

とても色とりどりですね。あざやかな色がたくさんある。なぜそうしたのですか？

ISHIKAWA:

Do they look American?

アメリカっぽく見えますか？

MARTIN:

Not exactly. No, they don't. The clothes don't look American.

そうとは言い切れません。いいえ、そうは見えません。服はアメリカっぽくは見えません。

ISHIKAWA:

Good. I don't want that group of people to be American.

それはよかった。あの人々をアメリカ人にはしたくないのです。

MARTIN:

You've done a good job of that.

そこはとても上手く描けていると思います。

ISHIKAWA:

Where are they from?

彼らはどこの出身だと思いますか？

MARTIN:

I'm not able to say exactly. They're from some warm place.

はっきりわかりません。どこか暖かいところでしょう。

ISHIKAWA:

Yes, yes. Some warm place.

そうです。そう。どこか暖かいところ。

MARTIN:

It looks like an island.

島のように見えます。

ISHIKAWA:

Good, good.

そうです。そう。

MARTIN:

Ishikawa, why are they so large?

石川さん、なぜ彼らはそんなに大きいのですか？

ISHIKAWA:

They are not large. The island is small. Do they look happy?

大きくありません。島が小さいのです。幸せそうに見えますか？

MARTIN:

Well, yes they do.

うーん、ええ、見えます。

ISHIKAWA:

So what do you think?

MARTIN:

The sun isn't warm. But these people are still in a warm place. They're happy. But their island, their home, is too small.

太陽は暖かくない。でもこれらの人々はそれでも暖かいところにいる。彼らは幸せです。しかし彼らの島、彼らの母国、はあまりにも小さい。

ISHIKAWA:

Good, good. That's not bad.

そう。そうです。悪くない。

MARTIN:

I'll have to think about that.

そのことについて考えてみなければ。

MARTIN:

Ishikawa, I don't think I understand all of the painting.

石川さん、私は絵の全てを理解できていないと思います。

ISHIKAWA:

That's all right. I don't want people to understand it all at once. They should look at it over and over again.

それでいいのです。私は人々にすべてを一度に理解してもらいたいとは思っていません。絵を何度も繰り返し見ればいいのです。
