Lesson 93, Part 1

  音 L93P1J.MP3[635KB]

TINA:

Could I say something?

TINA:

I'm Tina Barkowski. I have two children. I have a boy who's six and a girl who's four. I don't let them watch TV anymore.

JAY:

That may be a good idea, but I can't do that.

TINA:

Why not? I don't think it's difficult.

JAY:

I'm a single parent. I have to fix breakfast before they go to school. I have to make dinner in the evening.

TINA:

How many children do you have?

JAY:

Three.

TINA:

How old are they?

JAY:

They are eight, ten, and twelve. I can't spend all of my time with them. They have to do something. They like TV, and it keeps them busy.

ANITA:

I'm Anita Conti. Do you know what your children watch, Mr.-- What was your name?

JAY:

Jay. Jay Filosa. I know what they watch. Mostly.

ANITA:

I think there is too much violence on television too. But isn't it a good idea to let children watch good programs?

YUKI:

I am Yuki Mori. May I say something? In my opinion, it is wrong.

TINA:

I think so too.

YUKI:

No, no. I mean something different. I mean children should watch television. My children learn so much. I think television is good for them.

VANCE:

I'm Vance. Do you let them watch everything?

TINA:

I hope not!

VANCE:

Let Yuki answer.

YUKI:

My children are small. They go to bed early. They do not see guns on television.

ANITA:

I think they see violence anyway. What about the cartoons after school? Do they watch those? I feel these are worse than the programs for adults.

TINA:

I agree. Someone is always hitting and kicking someone.

ANITA:

I don't like the animal programs either. I think they're terrible.

JAY:

What's wrong with animals?

ANITA:

There's nothing wrong with animals. What they show on television is too violent I think.

VANCE:

Don't you think children need to know about real life?

TINA:

I'm not sure. I don't think so. They need to have better experiences.

JAY:

What are better experiences? What would you have them watch?

TINA:

I told you. I don't let them watch. They play. I read to them. We talk. Their father reads to them.

JAY:

There you are. Remember I'm a single parent. I can't do all of those things.

TINA:

I know it's difficult. But I believe we can find something besides TV for our children.

ANITA:

Yuki, do you watch the programs your children watch?

YUKI:

Yes. Sometimes I watch with them.

VANCE:

Don't you think they are too violent for children?

YUKI:

Sometimes, but we talk about such programs.

ANITA:

I think that's very good.

ANITA:

I would like to hear more examples. I feel we need more talk.
