I'd like to go on a trip to Europe.

AGENT:

Is this trip for business or vacation?

MARTIN:

It's a holiday with my family.

家族とすごす休日です。

AGENT:

How many members of your family?

ご家族の何人とですか？

MARTIN:

A wife and two children.

妻と子供2人です。

AGENT:

How old are the children?

お子さんたちの歳はいくつですか？

MARTIN:

They're teenagers.

子供たちはティーンエイジャー(13-19歳)です。

AGENT:

Are they students?

学生ですか？

MARTIN:

Yes.

AGENT:

It makes a difference you know. How long will you be staying in Europe?

それによって違いますのでね。ヨーロッパにどのくらい滞在するつもりですか？

MARTIN:

All together three weeks, I think.

全旅程、3週間にしようと思います。

AGENT:

That's good. That makes it cheaper.

結構ですね。そうすると割安になります。

MARTIN:

But not all in one place.

しかし、ひとところにずっとというわけではありません。

AGENT:

How will you be traveling in Europe? By air?

ヨーロッパでは何で（交通手段）移動されますか？飛行機ですか？

MARTIN:

No, not by air. I think we'll travel by train and bus.

いいえ、飛行機ではなく、列車とバスで旅行しようと思います。

AGENT:

That's fine. I can help you with that too. Have you traveled in Europe before?

わかりました。それもお手伝いできます。以前にヨーロッパを旅行したことはありますか？

MARTIN:

A long time ago. When I was a university student.

ずいぶん前です。私が大学生の時です。

AGENT:

Did you study in Europe?

ヨーロッパで勉強されたのですか？

MARTIN:

No. I just traveled in the summer with friends. I'm sure it's very different now.

AGENT:

In what way?

MARTIN:

Travel must be much faster now.

今の旅はずいぶんと速いものになっているに違いありません。

AGENT:

There are some very fast trains now. I think that bus travel may be slower than it was twenty years ago.

今はとても速い列車があります。バス旅行は20年前よりも時間がかかるかもしれません。

MARTIN:

Why?

なぜですか？

AGENT:

The roads are so crowded. There are many more cars. The buses must be more careful. Of course the modern buses are more comfortable.

道路がとても混んでいますから。（以前より）ずっと車が多いです。（以前より）バスは注意しなければなりません。もちろん近頃のバスは（以前のものより）快適です。

MARTIN:

How?

AGENT:

They have television. They have toilets. They serve food. Not like the old buses.

テレビがあります。洗面所があります。食事が出ます。昔のバスのようではありません。

MARTIN:

I like to travel by train. Can we travel most places by train?

列車で旅行するのが好きです。ほとんどの場所は列車で行くことができますか？

AGENT:

It depends on the country. There are a lot of trains, but not as many in the smaller towns.

国によります。列車はたくさんあります。しかし小さな町ではそれほど多くはありません。

MARTIN:

It was much easier to travel by train in Europe than it was in the United States.

（昔は）列車旅行はアメリカよりヨーロッパの方がだんぜん楽だったです。

AGENT:

Oh, yes. It still is, but there aren't as many trains as there used to be.

MARTIN:

Can we go by train to the major cities?

主要都市へは列車で行くことができますか？

AGENT:

Of course, and to smaller cities too. Just tell me where you want to go.

MARTIN:

I think we'll go from north to south.

北から南へと行きたいと思います。

AGENT:

Would you like to start in England?

イギリスから旅を始めたいですか？

MARTIN:

That's where I started twenty years ago.

20年前私が旅を始めたところです。

AGENT:

That sounds good then. You'll want to see how things have changed.

MARTIN:

Things won't have changed that much.

There will be lots of changes.

MARTIN:

I remember I didn't always like the food.

AGENT:

That will have changed. You can get all kinds of food everywhere. Even fast foods.

MARTIN:

My children will be happy then.

AGENT:

Everyone speaks English now. You can find someone who speaks English in all the countries.

MARTIN:

But I want to practice my foreign languages. On my last trip I didn't know anything but English.

AGENT:

That's fine. But everyone will want to try their English with you. You'll be very comfortable.
