Lesson 80, Part 1

  音 L80P1J.MP3[613KB]

MARTIN:

Did you start the club?

JANETTE:

Yes, we did.

MARTIN:

Why? Aren't there already several clubs like this one?

JANETTE:

Paul, you answer that.

PAUL:

I don't think there are clubs exactly like this one. We wanted an outdoor club for both boys and girls.

JANETTE:

And we wanted one for nine to twelve-year-olds.

PAUL:

Also it's just a local club. It isn't national. These boys and girls all live in the valley below.

JANETTE:

Mostly, we love these magnificent mountains. We wanted to help children love them too.

PAUL:

I was born in the high mountains of Southern France. My parents moved to Wyoming when I was nine years old. We spent all of our free time hiking and camping in the mountains. I met Janette in the mountains.

MARTIN:

In Wyoming?

JANETTE:

Yes. I was working in one of the parks. I was a teacher in the winter, but I worked in the park in the summer. Now we spend the summer with the children in the club.

PAUL:

We teach them.

MARTIN:

I want to talk to the children too. Is that all right?

JANETTE:

Sure.

PAUL:

Hannah! Come here please.

JANETTE:

Hannah, this is Martin Learner. He would like to ask you a few questions.

HANNAH:

What about?

MARTIN:

About the young adventurers. Is that all right?

HANNAH:

We don't call ourselves that. It sounds like a movie!

MARTIN:

What do you call yourselves?

HANNAH:

I don't know.

MARTIN:

Do you enjoy being outdoors?

HANNAH:

I love it. It's my favorite time of the year.

MARTIN:

What do you like?

HANNAH:

I especially like the mountains.

MARTIN:

Can you describe what you like?

HANNAH:

It's so peaceful and quiet. All you can hear are the small birds and the little animals on the ground.

MARTIN:

Do you like to look at the mountains?

HANNAH:

Oh, sure. We're in the mountains. But they go on and on. Look over there. See. There are more mountains. Then look over there. More and more mountains. They're far away. And they're so beautiful.

MARTIN:

It seems so quiet. Don't you get bored?

HANNAH:

No, living outdoors is exciting.

MARTIN:

Aren't you afraid sometimes?

HANNAH:

Not with the other kids, and not with Janette and Paul. Besides, it's an adventure. That's why we belong to the club.

MARTIN:

Where are we going to hike today?

HANNAH:

Look over there. Do you see that big white rock? There is some green grass on the hillside below.

MARTIN:

Are there some yellow flowers too?

HANNAH:

Yes. That's where we're going for a picnic.

MARTIN:

Thank you, Hannah. I enjoyed talking to you. I'll see you on the hike.
