Lesson 76, Part 1

  音 L76P1J.MP3[600KB]

MARTIN:

It's very quiet here.

GUIDE:

It's not so quiet. Listen.

MARTIN:

I see what you mean.

GUIDE:

Of course there are no cars.

MARTIN:

No trucks. No motors. No computers. No people. Where are the nearest people?

GUIDE:

We're about twenty miles from the nearest small town. That's where we're going.

MARTIN:

How far have we come this morning?

GUIDE:

Maybe five or six miles. Our camp last night was just over that hill.

MARTIN:

That doesn't look so far. Is it really five miles over there?

GUIDE:

It isn't if you walk over the hill. But the river goes around the hill. How long have we been going?

MARTIN:

About an hour and a half. But we stopped several times while I took pictures. Does this river go beyond the town?

GUIDE:

Yes. The river runs into a lake.

MARTIN:

How far is the lake?

GUIDE:

About twenty miles. The town is on the lake. It's on the other side of the lake, but it's built on the lake. The river runs into the lake, then it runs out the other side of the lake.

MARTIN:

Do you live in the town?

GUIDE:

I live near the town. I live beyond the lake about three miles.

MARTIN:

Do you live in the forest?

GUIDE:

Yes. But I live beside the river too. My brothers and I all have houses there.

MARTIN:

How many brothers do you have?

GUIDE:

I have five brothers and three sisters.

MARTIN:

That's a village!

GUIDE:

Almost. My sisters don't live there. They are married and live in the city.

MARTIN:

What work do your brothers do?

GUIDE:

We all do the same. We hunt and fish. We are guides most of the year.

MARTIN:

Who do you guide?

GUIDE:

Hunters. We also take people fishing to the larger lakes and the rivers.

MARTIN:

Do you have many people like me?

GUIDE:

You mean people who just want to see the wilderness? Many. When I was young, we had only hunters and fishermen. Now we have mostly people who just want to look.

MARTIN:

Where do you take them?

GUIDE:

We hike to the larger lakes. We canoe in the rivers. Many people like to visit the waterfalls in the area. We have six large falls.

MARTIN:

Where are they?

GUIDE:

Not too far. One is near where we camped last night. It's the other way, up the river.

MARTIN:

Can we see some of the falls?

GUIDE:

Tomorrow. There is one after the town, down the river about ten miles. We'll see that one. It's on a stream that runs into this river beyond the town.
